Ingredients

  • 4 cups finely shredded green cabbage
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrots
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise preferably Duke’s or Hellmann’s
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice

Instructions

  • Prepare the vegetables: Start by shredding the cabbage and carrots very finely — the finer the texture, the closer you’ll get to that signature Chick-fil-A coleslaw crunch. You can use a food processor or slice them by hand using a sharp knife or mandoline. Place both the cabbage and carrots into a large mixing bowl.
  • Mix the dressing: In a separate medium-sized bowl, combine the sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir in the milk, mayonnaise, vinegar, and lemon juice. Whisk everything together until smooth and creamy. The mixture should be slightly tangy and sweet, with a balanced flavor that coats the spoon nicely.
  • Combine and toss: Pour the dressing over the cabbage and carrots. Use a spatula or large spoon to gently toss until every piece of cabbage is evenly coated. Take your time mixing to make sure the dressing seeps into the shredded veggies for that authentic, well-blended texture.
  • Chill for best flavor: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the coleslaw to an airtight container. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving — this step allows the flavors to meld beautifully and the cabbage to soften slightly while still keeping its crisp bite. For an even better flavor, let it rest overnight.
  • Serve and enjoy: Give the coleslaw one last stir before serving. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. It pairs perfectly with fried chicken sandwiches, grilled meats, or even as a topping for pulled pork sliders. The cool, creamy crunch makes it a refreshing side dish for any occasion.
