Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt adjust to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika optional for depth of flavor
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water
  • 1 tablespoon flour optional, for thicker sauce
  • Fresh parsley chopped, for garnish

Instructions

  • Cook the ground beef: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beef is browned and fully cooked. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
  • Sauté the onions: Push the beef to one side of the skillet and add the sliced onions. Cook over medium heat for 5–7 minutes until the onions soften and begin to caramelize, stirring occasionally. Add the minced garlic during the last minute of cooking to avoid burning and to release its aroma.
  • Season the mixture: Sprinkle the salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika over the beef and onions. Stir well to evenly distribute the seasonings. Pour in the Worcestershire sauce and continue cooking for another 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  • Make the sauce: If you want a thicker, richer sauce, sprinkle the flour over the beef and onions and stir to coat evenly. Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring, ensuring there are no lumps. Let the mixture simmer for 3–4 minutes until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.
  • Combine and finish: Stir everything together thoroughly so the beef is fully “smothered” in the flavorful onion sauce. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Remove from heat and sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley for a pop of color and freshness.
  • Serve: Transfer the smothered ground beef and onions to a serving dish. This dish pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, steamed rice, or buttered noodles, allowing the savory sauce to soak into the sides. Serve hot for a comforting, hearty meal.
