    • Peach Jam

My kids absolutely love spreading homemade peach jam on toast in the morning, and they also enjoy it with yogurt or even by the spoonful. It’s one of those sweet and simple things that just make breakfast or snack time feel special. They ask for it every summer when peaches are in season, and it’s become a little tradition in our home.

I have started making peach jam at home because store-bought versions are often too sugary or contain preservatives.

I use fresh ripe peaches, a little sugar, lemon juice, and sometimes a touch of cinnamon or vanilla for warmth. I never use boxed pectin because I prefer a more natural set that comes from the fruit itself when simmered.

This beautiful jam can be used as a sweet spread and a baking ingredient, some spoonfuls stirred into oatmeal or over pancakes. This jam is truly versatile and adds a homemade touch to so many meals.

What is Peach Jam?

Peach jam is a sweet fruit preserve made by cooking fresh peaches with sugar and lemon juice until thickened into a soft, spreadable consistency. It’s different from jelly because it uses the whole fruit, not just juice, which gives it a lovely texture.

Perfect for:

  • Breakfast Spreads
Peach jam is perfect on warm toast, croissants, bagels, or biscuits. It turns a simple morning into something sweet and special.
  • Gifting
Homemade peach jam makes a thoughtful gift for friends, teachers, or neighbors. A cute jar with a ribbon always brings smiles.
  • Baking
Use it inside muffins, cakes, or thumbprint cookies for a fruity twist. It adds both flavor and color.
  • Lunchbox Treats
Pack a little peach jam with crackers or spread it in peanut butter sandwiches. It’s kid-friendly and mess-free.
  • Entertaining
Serve peach jam on a cheese board with crackers and soft cheese. It’s fancy but super easy.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups peeled and chopped ripe peaches (about 6 large peaches)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice (fresh or bottled)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Kitchen Equipment You’ll Need

  • Medium or large saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or heat-safe spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Potato masher (optional)
  • Clean jars with lids
  • Funnel (optional but helpful for filling jars)
  • Plate for testing doneness (chilled in the freezer)

How To Make Peach Jam

Step 1

Peel and chop the peaches into small pieces. You can blanch them for 30 seconds in boiling water to peel them easily, then drop them into ice water.

Step 2

In a large saucepan, combine peaches, sugar, and lemon juice. Stir well and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

Step 3

Reduce heat to medium. Stir often and simmer for 30–35 minutes, or until thickened. You can mash the peaches a bit or leave them chunky.

Step 4

Dip a spoon in the jam and place it on a cold plate—if it wrinkles slightly when pushed, it’s ready. If not, cook a few more minutes.

Step 5: Add flavor (optional)

Stir in vanilla extract and cinnamon for extra warmth and sweetness.

Step 6

Pour hot jam into clean jars. Let it cool, then cover with lids.

Notes

  • Use very ripe peaches
The riper the fruit, the sweeter and more flavorful your jam will be.
  • Peel peaches for a smoother texture
Blanch peaches in hot water for 30 seconds, then slip off skins easily.
  • Mash or leave chunky
You can mash the peaches for a smoother jam or leave bits for texture’s your choice.
  • Don’t rush the cooking
Let the jam simmer so it thickens naturally without burning.
  • Add lemon juice
It helps balance the sweetness and acts as a natural preservative.
  • Test with a cold plate
Drop a little jam on a cold plate, it wrinkles when you push it, it’s ready.
  • Sterilize jars for longer storage
If you want to store jam for months, make sure jars are clean and hot before filling.

Optional Ingredients You Can Add

  • Vanilla extract: Adds warmth and richness to the flavor.
  • Cinnamon: A pinch gives a cozy, spiced taste.
  • Chili flakes: For a sweet-and-spicy twist.
  • Ginger: Fresh or ground ginger adds brightness and depth.
  • Lemon zest: Boosts the citrus note and freshness.
  • Almond extract: Just a drop gives a lovely nutty aroma.

Ways to Use Peach Jam

One of my favorite ways to use peach jam is on toast with a little butter melts beautifully and brings out the sweet flavor of the peaches. It also makes a great topping for waffles, pancakes, or even over vanilla yogurt. You can swirl it into oatmeal or cottage cheese for a fruity boost.

Peach jam is also wonderful in baking. I love adding a spoonful into the center of thumbprint cookies or spreading it between layers of vanilla cake. It brings moisture, color, and that perfect summery taste to homemade treats. You can even warm it slightly and drizzle it over ice cream or cheesecake.

If you’re hosting a gathering, peach jam can shine on a charcuterie board. Just place a small bowl of it next to soft cheeses like brie or goat cheese. Add crackers or sliced baguette, and it becomes a sweet, elegant touch that everyone reaches for.

Is Peach Jam Healthy?

Peach jam is a sweet treat, but when you make it at home, you control what goes into it. It contains natural fruit sugars and just a small amount of added sugar. Homemade versions are healthier than store-bought because they’re free from preservatives, dyes, or corn syrup. Enjoy in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

Variations and Substitutions You’d Like to Try

Low-Sugar Peach Jam
Reduce sugar by half and cook a bit longer. The jam will be less sweet but still delicious and fruity. Store in the fridge for freshness.

Peach and Strawberry Jam
Use half peaches, half strawberries for a mixed fruit flavor. It’s bright, sweet, and pretty pink. A fun summer combo.

Honey Peach Jam
Replace some or all of the sugar with honey. It adds a floral, rich flavor and makes the jam feel extra homemade.

Peach and Ginger Jam
Add grated fresh ginger while cooking. The spicy warmth balances the sweet peaches perfectly. Ideal for fall or cooler weather.

Spicy Peach Jam
Add chili flakes or jalapeño slices for heat. Sweet and spicy jam is amazing with cheese or grilled meats.

Vanilla Peach Jam
Stir in a splash of vanilla extract at the end of cooking. It adds a mellow, creamy note that kids love.

Peach Freezer Jam
Skip the stove and mix crushed peaches with sugar and lemon juice. Store in the freezer. Easy and quick for beginners.

Chunky Peach Preserves
Leave large peach pieces and cook less for a looser, spoonable preserve. Great for desserts and glazes.

How to Store

Let your peach jam cool completely, then transfer it into clean jars with tight-fitting lids. If you plan to use it soon, keep the jars in the refrigerator and use them within 3 weeks.

For longer storage, sterilize your jars and lids in boiling water, fill them with hot jam, and seal tightly. Store in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year. Once opened, always refrigerate and use within a few weeks.

FAQ

Can I make peach jam without added sugar?

Yes, you can reduce or skip the sugar, but the jam will be less sweet and won’t keep as long. Store it in the fridge and enjoy within two weeks.

How do I know when the jam is ready?

Drop a small spoonful on a cold plate and push it with your finger. If it wrinkles a bit, it’s ready. If not, let it simmer a few more minutes.

Can I use lemon juice from a bottle?

Yes, bottled lemon juice is fine and preferred in canning because the acidity is consistent. It helps the jam set and keeps it safe to store.

What’s the difference between peach jam and peach preserves?

Jam is smoother and usually has mashed fruit. Preserves have larger fruit chunks and a looser texture. Both taste great—it’s just about preference.

How long does homemade peach jam last?

In the fridge, it lasts up to 3 weeks. If canned properly in sterilized jars, it can last up to a year when stored in a cool, dark place.

Can I double this recipe?

Yes, but be sure to stir often and cook longer since larger batches take more time to thicken. Use a bigger pot so it doesn’t overflow.

Why is my peach jam too runny?

It may need more cooking time to reduce the liquid, or the peaches had a lot of water. Keep simmering and stir often until it thickens.

Can I make this recipe in the microwave or slow cooker?

This recipe is best made on the stovetop, but you can experiment with a slow cooker on high. Just leave the lid off so the jam can reduce properly.
